May 2024 Project Activities

May 2024 was a successful congress month for the participants of the STEPUPIORS project.

Dr Suzana Stojanovic-Rundic and Dr Mladen Marinkovic attended the ESTRO 2024 Congress organized by the European Society for Radiotherapy and Oncology titled: Radiation Oncology: Bridging the Care Gap, Glasgow, UK.

Dr Radmila Jankovic and Dr Jelena Spasic gave lectures at the CUMO2024 Congress organized by the Montenegro Society for Medical Oncology in Budva, Montenegro.

Dr Mladen Marinkovic gave a lecture at the 2nd National Oncology Congress held in Nis, Serbia.

Dr Teresa Botta-Orfila presented a collaborative abstract: “International Collaborative Biobanking: Shaping the future together” at the Europe Biobank Week Congress 2024 held in Vienna, Austria.

Dr Marija Đorđić Crnogorac presented a project abstract and Dr Ana Krivokuca presented a lecture at the 15th International Symposium on Variants in the Genome, held in Porto, Portugal


Lecture at TRANSLACORE COST Action meeting

Aleksandra Stanojevic, MSc, participated in the annual Management Committee Meeting of the COST action CA21154 – Translational control in Cancer European Network – TRANSLACORE held in Prague, Czech Republic at Milan Hašek Conference Hall.

During the first day of meeting participants delivered presentations about translational control in cancer research. The second day of the meeting was dedicated to Working Group meeting and Management Committee Meeting. Aleksandra gave a 15min presentation “Acquisition Mass Spectrometry Analysis of FFPE Rectal Cancer Samples Offers In-Depth Proteomics Characterization of the Response to Neoadjuvant Chemoradiotherapy”.

The meeting aimed at integrating disciplines and knowledge across Europe to promote translational control in cancer, produced exciting debates and new collaborations. Following the meeting, a number of prospects for collaboration with other participants in this Action appeared, including scheduled meetings to discuss grant and project an opportunity in the future.




STEPUPIORS supported Webinar

During the Scientific Day 2024 of the Serbian Association for Cancer Research Prof. Antoni Castells from Hospital Clínic de Barcelona delivered a STEPUPIORS supported Webinar:  “Colorectal cancer screening: great opportunities and new challenges”
The meeting was attended by Serbian and international researchers from various institutions, leading to vivid discussions on this globally important topic with insight from different countries.




Open Day on colorectal cancer

On March 25, the IORS hosted an Open Day focused on colorectal cancer. The event aimed to raise awareness, support affected individuals, and emphasize the importance of prevention and early detection. It featured oncology experts, medical professionals, representatives from patient associations, and a genetic counselling team. Attendees heard a patient’s experience with treatment and genetic testing for hereditary syndromes, while discussions covered prevention, symptoms, diagnosis, treatment, and rehabilitation of colorectal cancer.




STEPUPIORS lectures at TRANSLACORE COST Action webinar

The 6th Webinar “Cancer medicine – Rectal Cancer Predictive Biomarkers” organized by the Early Career Investigators network under the TRANSLACORE COST Action was held on Monday, April 22nd and featured STEPUPIORS lecturers Milena Cavic, Mladen Marinkovic and Aleksandra Stanojevic.

Τhe webinar focused on the following lectures:

“Pretreatment MRI Radiomics in Rectal Cancer Chemoradiotherapy Prediction” by Mladen Marinkovic, IORS

“In-Depth Proteomics Characterization of the Response to Neoadjuvant Chemoradiotherapy in Rectal Cancer” by Aleksandra Stanojevic, IORS

The meeting was moderated by Dr Paulina Podszywalow-Bartnicka from the

Nencki Institute of Experimental Biology, Warsaw, Poland. Exciting discussions were held and new collaborations formed from this new network dedicated to bridging disciplines and expertise across Europe in order to advance translational control in cancer.



Midterm Review Meeting

On March 18, 2024, the STEPUPIORS consortium had a Midterm Review Meeting with the Project Officer Dr Irimie Doru-Leonard of the Research Executive Agency, European Commission, and an External Monitor Prof. Roman Volchenkov, from the University of Oslo, Norway. Main project results, deliverables, milestones and future plans were outlined by work package leaders and project managers from all partner institutions, in a friendly and stimulating atmosphere. The midterm report was approved by the REA EuC and the consortium participants look forward to next project steps.

STEPUPIORS PIs Milena Cavic and Remond Fijneman presented latest project results and advancements in the colorectal cancer and liquid biopsy field at the science-packed AACR24 Congress of the American Association for Cancer Research, held from Apr 05-10, 2024 in San Diego, USA. Exciting discussions and plans for future projects on colorectal cancer predictive biomarkers were made with various stakeholders.

Open day at IORS - focus on colorectal cancer in Serbia

On March 25, 2024, at 1 p.m., the Institute of Oncology and Radiology of Serbia will host an OPEN DAY on the topic of “Colon Cancer,” where our experts will try to answer all your questions.

We will talk about:
– how to recognize the symptoms of the disease in time
– how patients with colon cancer are treated today in the most modern way
– what is the role of the hereditary factor in the development of this disease
– how and when to seek psychological support

We will hear the story of our patient who was treated for colon cancer and underwent genetic testing at the Genetic Counseling Center of the Institute of Oncology and Radiology of Serbia.

The workshop is intended for patients, their family members, and anyone interested in expanding their knowledge on this topic.

STEPUPIORS PIs featured in EACR's Cancer Researcher Magazine

STEPUPIORS PIs Milena Cavic, Jerome Zoidakis, Sergi Castellví-Bel and Remond J.A. Fijneman were featured in the Cancer Researcher Magazine of the European Association for Cancer Research. They presented project aims and first achievements, giving advice to a wide audience of over 12,000 EACR members on how to use widening funds to increase the visibility and excellence of cancer research across Europe.
